The linen or moss stitch is one of my most trusty go to stitches. With the right yarn weight and hook combo you can create a really sturdy yet flexible fabric, perfect for basket, bags, and mats.
Yet it's really easy to loosen up with a bigger hook and enjoy a comfortable drape on garments.
Like so many stitches the pairing of two very basic stitches the single crochet and the chain creates a delicious combo.
STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS
CH - Chain
SC - Single Crochet
SK - Skip next stitch
FOUNDATION
Chain in multiples of 2 plus 1.
PATTERN
Long hand instructions
Working in the second chain from the hook
Single crochet.
*Chain 1
Skip the next stitch
Single crochet into the next stitch
Repeat from * until the end
*Chain 1 (this is the turning chain)
Turn your work
From now on we will working in to the Chain 1 spaces created from the previous round, these should be easy to spot as they will be larger gaps.
Single crochet into Chain 1 space, Chain 1, skip next stitch and single crochet into the next chain 1 space.
Repeat until you end up with a single crochet in the last space (This was your turning chain)
Repeat rows from * until you reach your desired length.
Short hand instructions
Working in the second chain from the hook
SC, CH1, SK, SC, *CH1, SK, SC - Repeat from * until the end
CH1, TURN
SC into CH1 space, *CH1, SK, SC into CH1 space - Repeat from * until the end
Repeat last row until you reach your desired length.
